Part of a main road linking Auckland to Helensville has reopened, after it was closed on Labour Day following a "serious" two-vehicle crash.

It happened at the intersection of State Highway 16 and Wharepapa Road on Monday just before 7.30am.

Police said one person was seriously injured, and another moderately.

Fire and Emergency NZ attended the scene but said no one was trapped.

A section of SH16 was closed and police had diversions in place, but it had since reopened.

Waka Kotahi/New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said traffic in the area was light.

The Labour Weekend road toll so far stands at zero. The official weekend period finishes at 6am Tuesday.

NZTA warned traffic congestion on highways in and out of the main urban centres would be high on Monday, asking motorists to use its Journey Planner tool.

Six people died on the roads over Labour Weekend last year.
