A body has been found on the Far North's 90 Mile Beach.

Police have yet to identify the person, and say it's too soon to say if it was a diver reported missing at Ahipara - on the southern end of the beach - in December.

A seven-day rahui has been placed on the area by local iwi.

Police had since December 23 been searching the area for a local diver who went missing at Tauroa Point.

The initial search effort by sea and air was hampered by bad weather.

The rāhui is a temporary, customary ban on surfing, swimming, fishing and shellfish gathering, put in place by elders of Te Rarawa Kaiwhare and Ngā Tai o Te Uru.
