A farm in Tontouta planted 70 hectares of the cereal as an experiment and harvested 140 tonnes, local television reported.

The report said the GM-free crop grew well despite unusually dry conditions.

The wheat will be used as animal feed, which is usually imported in quantities of more than 10,000 tonnes a year.

The report also says corn, rice and other grains account for just under four percent of New Caledonia's agricultural output.
