French Polynesia crime statistics drop by more than eight per cent

11:06 am on 5 February 2007

The French authorities say last year there was an 8.5 percent drop in the number of reported crimes in French Polynesia over 2005.

The French high commissioner, Anne Boquet, says the target of recording fewer than 10,000 incidents was reached, mainly thanks to a 23 percent decline in thefts and burglaries.

The figures show a sligt rise in white collar crime and drugs-related offences.

The public prosecutor, Jean Bianconi, says unease remains over the incidence of sex crimes and domestic violence.

The figures for 2006 also show fewer road accidents and a road toll of just under 30.
