It is believed a person has been fatally shot in an inner Auckland suburb.
Armed police are outside a house on Tuarangi Road in Grey Lynn and the street has been cordoned off.
A woman at the scene told RNZ her nephew was the victim and police said others had been injured.
People who said they were family members of the victim were gathering on the street.
A number of police vehicles converged on the suburb after the incident was reported on Tuarangi Road about 6.50pm on Thursday.
The police Eagle helicopter was also circling the area.
There were at six police vehicles at the scene. A police tent had been set up outside a block of apartments.
"Initial reports are that there have been injuries," a police spokesperson said.
"Cordons are in place while emergency services operate at the scene.
"Further information will be provided when it is available."
Residents near Western Springs Park said police had told them to stay indoors.
St John Ambulance said it was called to the scene at 6.52pm.
A spokesperson said two rapid response vehicles, three ambulances and one operations manager were responding.
A man told the New Zealand Herald his grandson had been killed.
"I loved him. Loved him to bits," he said.
Police had promised a media release on the incident, but had not provided one as of midnight Thursday.
