Farmers on the Vanuatu island of Epi are expected to harvest over 10 tonnes of onions this year.
It is the second year of partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and a group of about 20 selected farmers, who had been trained to plant onions for markets in Port Vila and Luganville.
Matai Seremaiah said the aim was for farmers to satisfy the local market with their products so imports could be reduced and replaced by local organics.
Onions and potatoes were the examples of products, which had been imported to the country for nearly 40 years.
