PNG's O'Neill welcomes more Chinese investment

Papua New Guinea's prime minister, Peter O'Neill, has welcomed Chinese investors interested in developing the country's resource sector.

The National reports Mr O'Neill commended China's commitment to assist Pacific Island countries at last week's China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development and Cooperation Forum in southern China.

China has offered countries with which it has diplomatic ties a one billion US dollar concessionary loan for infrastructure developments.

The paper reports Mr O'Neill says the concessional loans mean PNG can do even more to meet the needs of its growing population and economy.

The prime minister says investment links between the two countries had grown significantly through major projects such as the Ramu nickel project in Madang.

He says he hopes to diversify exports to China.
