PNG Minister of Higher Education, Pila Nininga, confirmed funding would need to be made available by the Autonomous Bougainville Government with help from the National Government.

Speaking in parliament Mr Niningi said his government is seriously considering having a university there but the impetus for it has to come from the Bougainville Government.

He said he had spoken with Bougainville President John Momis and told him he would have to set some money aside for a university.

But he also told parliament that the National Government realises that a university has to be started there because of the distance people from Bougainville currently have to travel if they want a tertiary education.
