A survey shows a growing number of New Zealanders are afraid their privacy will be breached through new technology.

The poll by Roy Morgan Research used a sample of almost 12,000 people to find 62% are concerned about their cyber security compared with 58% in 2011.

Roy Morgan's New Zealand general manager Pip Elliott said during the same period, smart phone ownership had increased from 12% to 36% of New Zealanders above the age of 14.

Ms Elliot said ownership of tablet computers has increased from 5% of the population in 2011 to 25% now.

The increasing number of people adopting new gadgets are realising that the flipside to their convenience is the threat the devices pose to privacy, she said.
