Mr Robertson said it will take a new generation for the party to win the next general election.

He is one of four MPs to contest the leadership along with David Parker, Nanaia Mahuta and Andrew Little.

Mr Robertson said Labour must reconnect with New Zealanders through a new generation of leadership that looks forwards and outwards.

Labour appoints post-election review team

The Labour Party's national council has appointed a former British politician, Bryan Gould, as convenor of its post-election review.

Mr Gould will be joined by a former speaker of the house Margaret Wilson, broadcaster Stacey Morrison and professional company director Brian Corban to review why the party attracted just 24 percent support, giving it its lowest result since 1922.

Bryan Gould said the review was an opportunity for Labour to take a long, hard look at itself, with a view to learning and applying lessons and providing an effective opposition.

The first part of review will be completed by 7 December.
