The Maori Internet Society hopes efforts will be made to attract Maori students to new information and communications technology graduate schools.
Minister of Science and Innovation Steven Joyce on Tuesday announced that three new ICT graduate schools would be built in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
They will cost $28.6 million.
Mr Joyce said the country's ICT sector was growing rapidly, with firms struggling to find workers with the required skills.
Maori Internet Society spokesman Karaitiana Taiuru supports the move.
He said he would like to see Maori role models in the schools, and a marketing campaign saying ICT was compatible with te reo Maori and culture.
