Christchurch council wants longer to consult on coastal hazard zones

08:06 am on 1 September 2015

Christchurch City Council has asked the Independent Hearings Panel to extend the timeframe for public consultation on its proposed coastal hazard zones.

The council has identified more than 18,000 properties as being in coastal erosion and inundation zones, as part of its replacement district plan.

The process is being fast-tracked under earthquake recovery laws but hundreds of residents have urged the council to extend the 30-day submission timeframe, which is due to close on Friday.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel wrote to the Earthquake Recovery and Environment ministers asking for an extension but was told to refer the request to the panel.

A council spokesperson says it has now done this.
