Two people have died in a crash in New Plymouth this morning and in Auckland, seven people have been injured in a crash near the Waterview Tunnel.
Four others were also seriously injured in the New Plymouth crash.
Police said they were called to a crash between two vehicles on Main North Road in Motunui at about 1.30am this morning.
Two people died at the scene and the four people injured were in serious and critical conditions.
Police said the road would remain closed for several hours and were advising motorists to avoid travel around the area.
Meanwhile in Auckland, several people were injured after a crash in Auckland's Waterview Tunnel overnight - in what is thought to have been a wrong-way crash, the Herald is reporting.
Emergency Services were called to the suburb of Waterview just after 11.15pm last night.
Seven people were treated, with six in a serious condition.
Police have been approached for comment.
