The New Zealand swimmer Moss Burmester has finished fourth equal in the final of the men's 200 metres butterfly at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The American Michael Phelps trailed Burmester at the 50-metre mark but then took charge from the halfway stage to predictably win the gold medal - his fourth gold of the Games - and another world record.

Phelps clocked a time of 1 minute 52.03 seconds to claim his 10th Olympic gold medal of his career -- the first Olympian to do so.

Burmester went out strongly in the final and turned for home in second place but was edged out of the medals by Hungary's Laszlo Cseh (Chay) and Japan's Takeshi Matsuda.

Burmester swam a time of 1:54.35 to finish equal fourth with Wu Peng of China.
