Homeowners allowed to challenge quake zoning

05:40 am on 16 June 2012

Insured Christchurch homeowners who want to challenge how their land has been zoned will now be able to make an application to have the decision reviewed.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee announced details of the review process on Friday morning and gave an update on the progress of red zone property settlements.

Mr Brownlee says property owners on flat land have until 30 June this year to apply to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority for a review.

He says a similar review will be introduced for Port Hills residents by the end of June.

More than 7000 properties are zoned red, meaning they are unsuitable for occupation. A further 180,000 properties are zoned green, meaning they can be reoccupied.

Gerry Brownlee says about 550 people have contacted the authority over the past year to request a review of their status.
