PNG Governor offers help to utility sabotageurs

The governor of Papua New Guinea's National Capital District says he's offered help to the landowners who sabotaged the city's power and water supplies last week.

The Governor, Powes Parkop, says the Koiari people, who own most of the land in and around Port Moresby, took control of the city's electricity generation and water provision for two days last week in response to the killing of one of their young leaders.

Mr Parkop says the death inflamed a number of grievances they have over negotiations with the national government for increased benefit from the utilities.

"What I offered them is to help them in their negotiation with the National Government by giving them a financial package to help them meet expense and also prepare documents and if they want to engage consultants to help them so they have a good negotiation with the National Government."
