American Samoa's ASPA moves away from fuel supply business

The American Samoa Power Authority or ASPA is moving ahead with plans to get out of the fuel supply business once all provisions of its contract with ExxonMobil is addressed.

ASPA became the territory's second fuel supplier in late 2008 after ExxonMobil moved to terminate operation in the territory.

The Authority's move to be a supplier was highly criticized by lawmakers because the authority has ventured into a new business while the utility rates were going up.

ASPA board chairman Fonoti Perelini Perelini Senior told senators that the authority is moving forward with the plan to get out of the fuel provider business as soon as possible.
