Police believe multiple people are responsible for the murder of Hori Gage and subsequent burning of a car.

Hori Te Kouarehua James Gage, 27, was fatally shot in a car on 6 August in Palmerston North.

Detective Sergeant Dave Wilson says police are satisfied a silver SsangYong Rexton and a silver Subaru Legacy station wagon were used in the aftermath of the murder.

Both cars were previously recovered by police for forensic examination.

Police have executed a number of search warrants in recent weeks.

"Police believe there are multiple people responsible for the murder and the subsequent burning of a Nissan motor vehicle on Aranui Rd in the hours afterwards," Wilson said.

They are seeking sightings of the SsangYong, registration HJP372, in and around the Gillespies Line, Aranui Road and Tremaine Avenue areas on 6 August
