Pedestrians will have access to Victoria Square in the heart of Christchurch from midday on Friday, for the first time since the earthquake on 22 February.
The Square, which is near the Town Hall and beside the Avon River, has been cordoned off in the red zone since the quake.
Two pathways will be opened and people will have access daily from 7am to 9pm.
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says that while it is a small step, it is getting the city closer to being substantially rebuilt.
AAP reports decisions are still pending on the Town Hall and other projects. The Floral Clock and statues of Cook and Queen Victoria are being assessed.
