Fiji minister acquitted on dangerous driving charge

17:41 pm on 23 July 2016

A court in Fiji has acquitted the local government minister, Parveen Kumar Bala, who had been charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Mr Bala was alleged to have caused the death of Puna Chand in an incident near Lautoka more than two years ago.

But in the Lautoka Magistrates' Court on Friday, a judge ruled that he had no case to answer and acquitted the minister.

The director of public prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, says he will consider the ruling and make a decision on whether to appeal against it next week.
