A person has died following a crash on State Highway 2, north of Wellington.
Emergency services were called to the Remutaka Hill, between Kaitoke and Featherston, just after 6.30am.
Police earlier said initial indications suggested at least one person had been seriously injured, then confirmed the death shortly after 1pm.
The crash closed both lanes of the highway for several hours. The road was reopened at 11.45am.
"We extend our condolences to their families at this difficult time," police said in a statement.
It was not the only fatal accident in the Wellington region on Wednesday morning.
One person also died in a crash near Carterton, police said, about an hour later. They died at the scene of the accident on Kokotau Road.
It too has since reopened to traffic.
