Person dies after boat capsizes in Bay of Plenty

A person has died after the boat they were in capsized at the Kaituna River mouth in Paengaroa, Bay of Plenty.

Police said emergency services were notified about 11.45am that a small boat with two people on board had capsized.

The incident happened at the river mouth, near Ford Road, police said in a statement.

Coast Guard, Ambulance, Fire and Emergency NZ, and Police responded to the incident.

One person made it to shore and was taken to hospital in a serious condition. The second person was pulled from the water by rescuers and died a short time later.
