PNG police stretched to cope with Highlands election crises

15:04 pm on 26 July 2017

Tasked with providing security in a lengthy testy general election, Papua New Guinea's police force is being stretched to its limits in the Highlands region.

At least two parts of the Highlands have in recent days justified their billing as security hotspots during election time.

Travel in and out of the Western highlands capital has been disrupted after supporters of disgruntled candidates blockaded the airport.

And in the capital of Enga province, at least four people, including two police officers, were killed in deadly gunfire exchanges on Saturday between supporters of rival candidates.

PNG's police commissioner Gary Baki gave an update to Johnny Blades who began by asking about the situation in Enga's Wabag town.
