Fiji plans electronic voter registration for 2014 poll

18:45 pm on 8 July 2011

Fiji's interim minister for elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says Fiji plans to have an electronic voter registration system in place by 2014 when the interim regime has vowed to cede power to an elected government.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says the system will require a nationwide registration exercise inclusive of fingerprints, and photographs of all citizens who are now 15 years old and above.

He says the system is designed to speed up the voting process and help eliminate cheating for voter impersonation.

While the electronic voter registration will reduce costs through an established centralised voter database, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says it will improve sustainability for both national and municipality elections.
