05:50 am on 20 October 2008

Five French Polynesian airports are being renamed by adding a reference to local figures.

The head of the airport administration, Hiro Tefaarere, says the

territory's international airport will now be called Tahiti-Faa'a-Francis

Ariioheau Sanford to commemorate the town's former mayor and key proponent of autonomy.

The airports of Mooera, Huahine, Raiatea and Rangiroa are also being renamed after autonomy advocates or former mayors.

Three options are being considered for addition to the name of Bora Bora airport.
