Review of seasonal worker health checks to be held

14:44 pm on 14 May 2011

The Department of Labour says it will conduct a review after a seasonal worker from Samoa was found to have typhoid, forcing 100,000 trays of export kiwifruit to be destroyed.

Zespri ordered the destruction.

The department says the review will consider whether there should be a stand-down period before newly-arrived seasonal workers start working with food crops.

While seasonal workers are tested for typhoid, seasonal employer scheme head Stephen Dunstan says the worker in question could have contracted the disease in the period after the test and their arrival in New Zealand.
