A man is facing charges after the police say he escaped from custody and assaulted an officer who was trying to catch him.
Police say the man escaped from police custody in Helensville on Friday night and was found a short time later in the grounds of Kaipara College.
An officer had to be briefly treated in hospital with cuts to his arm after the incident.
The man appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Saturday charged with numerous offences, including assaulting a police officer and escaping custody.
He was granted bail.
