A homicide investigation began after the baby was found dead on Tuesday.

The scene examination at a house in Worth Street, behind Kaitaia hospital, will be completed this evening.

Police said yesterday the post-mortem indicated non-accidental injuries.

Northland CIB Acting Detective Inspector Lloyd Schmid said the inquiry was in the early stages.

He said any death, especially that of a young baby, was a tragedy, and it would be thoroughly investigated.
