Earthquake damaged suburbs in the east of Christchurch have been given a boost, with a main bridge reopening today.

Local school children dressed in high-vis vests and hard hats were among the first to cross the Dallington Bridge on Gayhurst Road.
The old bridge which was built in 1954 and suffered significant damage during the 2011 earthquakes, and was only open to light vehicles until its closure last year.
The $8.3 million dollar price tag for the new bridge was jointly funded by the Christchurch City Council and the Government.
Dallington Residents Association chairperson Mark Beanland said people in the area have been struggling since the earthquake, so the opening of the bridge will lift everyone's spirits.
