Action plan signed off for Manawatu River

A plan has been formally agreed to clean up the Manawatu River.

The river is one of the most polluted waterways in New Zealand and last year the key dischargers signed an accord to work towards improving it.

The Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Council's chief executive, Michael McCartney, says the action plan to be put in place next month has more than 130 specific actions.

Mr McCartney says Federated Farmers had agreed to the action plan after earlier refusing to sign the accord.
