Papua New Guinea - refugee

The Refugee Action Coalition says an Afghani refugee, his heavily pregnant wife and two young children have been forcibly evicted from their accommodation in Port Moresby.

The group's spokesperson Ian Rintoul said Papua New Guinea authorities are struggling to deal with the remaining 70 or so refugees dumped by Australia as part of its offshore detention programme on Manus Island, which it has since washed its hands of.

Around 24 refugees being housed in a hotel have also been threatened with eviction by the end of October because the hotel has not been paid for the refugees' accommodation for several months.

Rintoul said the only guarantee that the refugees would be safe is to bring them to Australia.

Fiji - children

Four out of five children in Fiji face abuse and violence, a new report has found.

The New Zealand government-funded 'Violence against Children in Fiji' was launched on Tuesday in Suva.

Fiji's women and children's minster Lynda Tabuya said the government has failed the nation's children.

She said the numbers have been "confronting" for many years and all stakeholders must work together to address the issue.

The Fiji government is currently having consultations on the Child Justice Bill and the Child Protection Bill.

Papua New Guinea - volcano

Mt Ulawun volcano has erupted in Paua New Guinea, but local authorities expected the activity to remain low.

The National newspaper reports the Rabaul Volcano Observatory saying initial signs of the Mt Ulawun volcano eruption showed around 5.30pm on Monday, local time.

The Observatory said there was a plume above the summit and then a glow, and a small stream of glowing lava down the northern upper slopes from the summit crater suggests there may have been a small lava flow.

Samoa - jailed

A Samoan grandfather has been jailed for inappropriately touching his two granddaughters.

The Supreme Court Justice noted the amended summary of facts suggests more opportunistic offending than a calculated and premeditated act.

The judge questioned how a grandfather could do such a vile and disgraceful act to his own granddaughters.

The defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison on a charge of sexual connection, and sentenced to 2 months' imprisonment on a charge of indecent assault, to be served concurrently.

Samoa - court

Samoa's former Football Association boss is taking his ex-employer to court - claiming he was unlawfully dismissed and wanting more than $US270,000.

Autu Andy Ripley said his employment contract was unlawfully terminated in June without following the proper process, after he was hired for three years in September 2021.

Autu said the football federation president approved his leave to travel to American Samoa but soon after, he received a letter via email notifying him of the board's decision to suspend him without pay for six weeks.

During the committee's review, he said he was never summoned or invited to respond to the issues raised by the board.

The matter is due to be heard in November.
