Fiji's fisheries authorities are to conduct a nationwide assessment of sea cucumber or beche-de-mer following a ban on its harvest.
The marine animal is regarded as a culinary delicacy in China and many Pacific island stocks are under threat.
The fisheries minister Semi Koroilavesau is reported in the Fiji Times saying it will be a huge exercise to check the stock around the country and then determine the most sustainable system to ensure beche-de-mer are not put back at risk.
He said Fiji can learn from other Pacific island countries which have instituted similar bans.
