A proposed road change in Kaikōura that would have diverted State Highway 1 past the town's centre has been dropped.
The Transport Agency proposed making the $30 million change to improve road safety at one of the town's busiest intersections.
Residents were however concerned about the impact on some properties.
Local iwi also said the diversion would have gone through a culturally sensitive area.
The Transport Agency said other safety improvements would be considered instead.
These could include speed management, additional lane marking and a pedestrian overbridge.
