At the Wellington sevens rugby tournament the New Zealand team has bounced back from an opening 28-17 loss to Wales as they look to avoid an early exit from the Cup.

Playing Niue without influential playmaker Tomasi Cama, who was red carded in the Wales loss, New Zealand opened up a 22-0 half-time lead with Save Tokula scoring a hat-trick in the first half as the hosts ran away with it 43-7.

New Zealand need to rack up a good points differential and win their remaining game against Australia to progress after Australia did them a favour by beating Wales 24-15.

Australia earlier came from behind to beat Niue 22-17.

There was another big upset on the first day in Wellington with the USA beating Fiji 15-10.

The Americans stayed close to Fiji then pounced after the Pacific Islanders were reduced to six men after a yellow card for a high tackle in the second half.

In the Wales game ill discipline also cost New Zealand as Cama was red carded early on for a punch and captain DJ Forbes was yellow carded for a foot trip.

Wales took advantage of their numerical superiority to score twice each side of the break, effectively sealing the game at 28-5.

Viliame Waqaseduadua and Forbes scored the next two tries and Wales lost a man for deliberately knocking down a pass but it was too little, too late.

Cook Islands paid the price of Fiji's frustrations, getting thrashed 55-0 in their next game.

Argentina also made amends for an opening draw with Canada by beating France 33-21.

The series-leading South Africans have been the only side to meet expectations of a blowout, beating Scotland 24-0. They also won their second game 22-5 over Tonga after Kenya also beat Tonga 21-14.

Scotland then beat Kenya 19-14.

England made a slow start before waking up in the second half to beat France 26-10. England also beat Canada 34-7 and Argentina beat France 33-21.

Samoa beat the Cook Islands 12-5 then ruined the USA's day by beating them 26-17.
