14:58 pm on 8 February 2010

Schools are planning to reopen in French Polynesia tomorrow after the disruption caused by Cyclone Oli.

Hundreds of people, mainly in the Austral islands, have been made homeless as several hundred homes were destroyed by winds in excess of 200 kilometres an hour.

The worst affected island is Tubuai in the Austral islands where about half of the dwellings were destroyed and a man was killed.

Initial relief operations were carried out by the French armed forces, with supplies being sent by ship.
