Strong winds have fanned the flames of the fire on Dunlops Road, Loburn, while another blaze, on the Ashley riverbank, has extended into a small plantation.

Residents living in the path of the smoke are being told to keep their windows and doors shut.

There is no threat to houses or buildings but people are asked to avoid the area.

Two helicopters and several crews are tackling the Loburn scrub fire.

Fire crews are also tackling a 14ha blaze at Cascade Road in Hurunui.

Another fire which broke out this morning on Blakes Road, Prebbleton, has been put out.

Haze from the fires near the Ashley River has spread over Rangiora.
