A person has died and another is in a serious condition after a two-car crash on State Highway 30, near Whakatane, St John Ambulance says.
The collision happened just before four 4pm near Angle Road, close to Awakeri.
The road has been closed and police were at the scene.
Traffic was being diverted at McLean Road and Angle Road, and at Luxton Road and State Highway 30.
