Solomons government considering new gun amnesty

10:40 am on 4 July 2003

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Sir Allen Kemakeza says the Government is considering a short amnesty period to encourage the surrender of illegal weapons before the arrival of the Australian led intervention force.

Sir Allen says Cabinet has approved a policy statement from his taskforce s considering the intervention proposal.

That statement will be distributed to all MPs this weekend ahead of next week's special session of Parliament which is expected to endorse the Australian plan.

Sir Allen says amnesty is one recommendation.

"To avoid any confrontation or possible new element of conflict, we mighjt consider giving them, two weeks if you like, to allow them to surrender their arms. What sometimes you call a last call."
