France to invest more in nuclear power

13:43 pm on 28 June 2011

President Nicolas Sarkozy says France will invest €1 billion in nuclear power despite warnings arising from the Fukushima disaster in Japan.

The nuclear plant's cooling systems were knocked out by the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March. The disaster caused a meltdown at three of the reactors and the plant is still leaking radiation.

French nuclear company Areva is developing a fourth generation of reactors and the new investment will include a boost for research into nuclear safety, the BBC reports.

Earlier this year, Germany, Switzerland and Italy voted against nuclear power after the Japanese disaster.

Some 80% of France's electricity is generated by nuclear power plants.
