A suburb of New Caledonia's capital Noumea has declared a nightly curfew with immediate effect.
The ban in the town of Dumbea prohibits any movement outside one's home from 10pm until 5am.
The curfew is to in force for a week.
The measure is to be provide extra security although restrictions declared imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19 already apply to all residents who need to have a written attestation to justify their movement.
Last week, two minors died after crashing a car they had stolen during the lockdown.
