Our guide of where to go, what to see and what to do this weekend.
Documentary Edge Film Festival: Celebrating its 11th year, the Doc Edge Film Festival got underway in Auckland last night and this year sees it run through until May 29. It’s going down at Q Theatre with dozens of local and international films on the line-up. Visit their official site for the full programme.
The Block Party: An impressive line-up of hip hop greats are coming together at ASB Showgrounds this Friday. The Block Party brings together Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Twista, Mobb Deep, Tha Dogg Pound and DJ Quik, while there’ll also be a strong local contingent who will have a stage of their own. Scoop up any remaining tickets here.
The Vottones: Japanese rock ‘n’ roll band The Vottones have been rarking it up big time with their tour of New Zealand over the past week. It’s all coming to an end with a show in Tauranga this weekend, but with their Lucha Lounge gig selling out, the band have decided to play a special additional Auckland show this Friday at F Bar. “First in, first disturbed”.
Better Living 2016: Christchurch label Melted Ice Cream are throwing their second annual Better Living party this Saturday at the Darkroom. This time we’ll see Invisible Threads, The Ex Waves, Centre Negative, Dark Matter and Slug Gun on the line-up, and word is there’s an Auckland leg of the event coming in the near future too. Tickets are $10 on the door, with the first act on at 8.30 sharp.
PHF and Roidz: Auckland bands PHF and Roidz are fundraising for their upcoming tour of the US with two shows this weekend. As they put it themselves, “they need your help because Creative New Zealand hates helping bands tour, and New Zealand Music Month would rather spend their money flying Shihad around the country.” They’ll play an all ages set at Fuzzy Vibes on Friday and another R18 show at Wine Cellar the following night.
Bailey Wiley and Yoko-Zuna: Two Auckland acts, Bailey Wiley and Yoko-Zuna, are on their way to Christchurch this Friday to showcase songs from their new releases at Little Neighbourhood. Wiley dropped her latest EP S.O.M.M. a few weeks back, while Yoko-Zuna are on the verge of releasing their latest effort Luminols. Presales are available through Eventfinder.
