Ouvea massacre film not on New Caledonia screen

New Caledonia's only cinema operator says it won't screen the French feature film based on the 1988 Ouvea hostage massacre.

The film by Mathieu Kassovitz, whose English title is Rebellion, will be released in a month.

In a statement, Mr Kassovitz says he is shocked that the movie won't be shown allegedly for fear of attracting resentment and weakening the forces of consensus.

An advance screening at the Tjibaou Centre in Noumea at the end of the month has also been called off.

The film was shot in French Polynesia last year after Mr Kassovitz faced resistance to the project in New Caledonia.

A key politician in Noumea, Pierre Frogier, then wrote to the French Polynesian government objecting to the film project going ahead.
