Organisers of the Rugby World Cup have surpassed their revenue target of $268.5 million.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 says it has exceeded its target by $200,000.

Some 87% of tickets have been sold, with seats available only for the third final playoff between Australia and Wales at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday night.

The promoter says ticket revenue is 11 times higher than New Zealand's previous highest grossing event - the 2005 British and Irish Lions tour.

It says more than $50 million worth of tickets alone have been sold to the final between the All Blacks and France at Eden Park on Sunday night.
