In a big step forward for the Christchurch rebuild, a new Ferrymead bridge will be opened to traffic today.
The bridge, which linkes the city to coastal hill suburbs like Sumner and Redcliffs, was so badly damaged in the 2011 earthquakes that the city council decided to demolish and replace it.
Phil Clearwater, who chairs the council's infrastructure, transport and environment committee, said the bridge project has been one of the most challenging, because of the complex foundations needed to cross the Heathcote River.
He said the bridge also housed communication and power cables as well as sewerage and water services.
