A person has been killed in a shark attack off Broome's Cable Beach, in Western Australia's north, according to local authorities.
At about 8:45am (local time), police were told of a serious shark attack at the popular tourist beach.
Police said a male was recovered from the water and was treated by local officers before St John Ambulance arrived.
Earlier, in an alert on its SharkSmart website, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said it was "investigating a possible shark bite incident".
A police spokesman said officers were responding with paramedics.
Authorities have asked people to take additional care near Cable Beach.
The beach has been closed.
