Paywalls now in place at two Fairfax newspapers

Fairfax has implemented paywalls for the digital versions of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, meaning customers will have to pay if they view more than 30 articles per month.

The Age editor-in-chief Andrew Holden said the subscription service is important for the future of Fairfax newsrooms.

"It will help us continue to provide the best independent coverage in Australia," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ABC reports that metered subscriptions will apply to the websites. Tablet applications will use a "freemium" model, where some articles are free, but others are only available to subscribers.

Fairfax chief executive Greg Hywood said last month that the move was part of a restructure which would save the company an additional $A60 million by the end of September.

Fairfax Media shares rallied more than 5% to 52 cents on Tuesday.
