NZ Green MP helps train PNG parliamentarians

Papua New Guinea's new parliamentarians are receiving training this week from their peers around the region.

New Zealand Green MP, Metiria Turei, is with other members of the Australian-run Council for Democratic Institutions, which is holding workshops in Port Moresby to make MPs more aware of their responsibilities.

She says a large number of the current MPs were newly elected in the July poll.

Ms Turei says the Council has been focussing on improving the MPs understanding of the select committee process.

"And that is really important because select committees are a major part of the machinery of a parliament, as opposed to a government, and since so many are new to that process, it is good to talk to them about it."

Metiria Turei says one of the biggest hurdles the PNG parliamentarians face is communicating with their constituents because of the size of the country and the low levels of literacy.

She says this hampers their ability to get feedback on issues.
