Northland investigations manager Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said police and ambulance went to a home in Te Kao after being told at 10.53pm that a man had been found badly injured.

The man who lived there had been injured with a knife and was confirmed dead when they arrived.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man, who they said was a long-time family friend of the dead man, shortly after.

The exact charges were yet to be confirmed.

They said they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the death, and the victim's identity was unlikely to be released today.
