Registrations of new private vehicles rose 12% in May compared to the month before, but amounted to just two-thirds of the level reached at the same time last year.
Registrations of commercial vehicles also jumped by nearly 10%.
The Motor Industry Association says the figures are encouraging, and is suggesting that sales have passed their low point.
