The English football giants Manchester United have beaten the Philadelphia Union 1-0 in a scrappy game against the US Major League's newest team.

United laboured in their second pre-season match after beating the Scottish premier league side Celtic 3-1 last week in Toronto.

The winning goal came in the 76th minute after Danny Welbeck intercepted a sloppy pass in midfield and ran straight through the defense before passing to Gabriel Obertan who scored.

United Coach Alex Ferguson says Philadelphia's aggressive play was just the sort of game his players needed.

Meanwhile Celtic beat Sporting Lisbon on penalties in the first football game at Boston's Fenway Park in 42 years.
